Pakistani Surgeon Makes History in UK With Advanced Robotic Surgery
A British-Pakistani surgeon has reached a major milestone in the United Kingdom after helping lead a specialist programme that has completed more than 400 procedures using single-port robotic technology.
Dr. Amer Raza, a consultant gynaecologist and robotic surgeon, leads a programme at Cromwell Hospital in London. A graduate of Nishtar Medical College in Multan, Dr. Raza has developed his work in advanced endometriosis treatment, minimally invasive surgery and robotic surgery.
The latest achievement has brought attention to the growing use of advanced robotic technology in complex gynaecological procedures.
What Is Single-Port Robotic Surgery?
Single-port robotic surgery is a minimally invasive surgical technique that allows a camera and multiple robotic instruments to operate through one abdominal entry point.
Traditional multi-port robotic surgery generally uses several small abdominal incisions. The single-port approach is designed around one entry point, through which the surgical system is used by the medical team.
According to Dr. Raza, his programme has expanded the use of this technology beyond relatively straightforward benign gynaecological procedures to some of the more complex cases involving endometriosis.
More Than 400 Procedures Completed
The robotic surgery programme at Cromwell Hospital has now successfully completed more than 400 procedures using single-port robotic technology.
The programme has also developed into a centre for surgical training and observation. More than 100 surgeons from the UK and other countries have reportedly visited the centre to observe procedures, exchange experience and learn about the use of single-port robotic surgery.
The development has helped make the London programme a point of interest for surgeons looking to understand how robotic technology can be used in complex gynaecological surgery.
Focus on Complex Endometriosis
One of the important areas of Dr. Raza’s work is advanced endometriosis surgery.
Endometriosis can cause significant pain and may affect fertility and quality of life. In complex cases, the condition can involve areas such as the bowel, bladder, urinary tract and other structures.
Dr. Raza has said that complex endometriosis care should involve more than surgery alone. Diagnosis, recovery, pain management, fertility considerations and long-term support can all form part of comprehensive care.
His work combines minimally invasive techniques with robotic technology for selected complex gynaecological cases.
Recognition in Robotic Surgery
Dr. Raza has also received two Master Surgeon accreditations in Robotic Surgery and Advanced Endometriosis Care from the US-based Surgical Review Corporation (SRC).
According to reports, the accreditations followed an external review of his surgical practice, patient outcomes, complications, governance and standards of care.
His latest milestone follows another notable achievement from several years earlier. He previously led a team that performed 12 major gynaecological operations in a single day using robotic surgical technology at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London.
A Link Between the UK and Pakistan
Although Dr. Raza has spent more than 25 years working in the United Kingdom, he continues to maintain professional links with Pakistan.
He has said that he regularly travels to Pakistan and wants to contribute to the development of modern medical care and surgical education there.
He has also discussed the possibility of sharing advances in robotic surgery, artificial intelligence, surgical education and modern women’s healthcare with medical professionals in Pakistan.
The growing use of robotic technology is creating new opportunities for surgical training and minimally invasive procedures. At the same time, specialists continue to emphasise the importance of appropriate patient selection, experienced medical teams and comprehensive clinical care.
A Milestone in Medical Innovation
The completion of more than 400 single-port robotic procedures represents a significant milestone for the programme led by Dr. Amer Raza at Cromwell Hospital.
The achievement also highlights the international nature of modern medical training, with surgeons from different countries visiting London to observe and learn advanced robotic techniques.
For Pakistan, the story also highlights the contribution of a Pakistani-trained medical professional working at the forefront of a specialised area of healthcare in the UK.
As robotic surgery continues to develop, collaboration between hospitals, surgeons and medical training centres could play an important role in expanding access to advanced surgical knowledge and technology.
Dr. Raza’s continuing links with Pakistan could also create opportunities for greater exchange of medical expertise between the UK and Pakistan in the future.
The latest milestone demonstrates how medical technology, specialist training and international collaboration are becoming increasingly connected in modern healthcare.
